Life in the Valley of Death

In The New York Times Magazine, Scott Anderson reports on the legacy of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia, in which Serbian troops killed more than 8,000 Bosnians. Although USAID has recently started a new initiative in the area aimed at reconciliation that “would add another $4.2 million in aid to the large amounts the agency has disbursed in Bosnia,” the ghosts of the twenty-year-old massacre continue to haunt this process. By weaving together first-person stories of the genocide and a narrative of the unfinished recovery of bodies buried in mass graves, Anderson and photographer Paolo Pellegrin describe in vivid detail—through words and pictures—how the memory of the massacre threatens the goal of reconciliation even today.
