Loyal to Ukraine, Tatars Lie Low as Russia Seizes Crimea
At Reuters, Alissa De Carbonnel reports that the Tatars, Ukraine’s indigenous Muslim population, are now keeping their head down after vocally expressing their loyalty to the new authorities in Kiev as Russia advances into Crimea. “We must do everything to prevent the atmosphere of fear and distrust in Crimea from escalating,” said community leader Refat Chubarov. A woman told a reporter, “We are scared for our families, for our children. This could be a new Yugoslavia.”
