The GOP Is Making a Play for the Black Evangelical Vote

Grace Wyler of New York Magazine reports that in Iowa last Friday, Republicans made an appeal to minority evangelicals by inviting a group of about 20 black and Hispanic pastors to a two-day conference. The group heard speeches from Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, as well as met with RNC chairman Reince Priebus to discuss how the GOP could improve relations with churches in minority communities.  “We don’t want outreach, that’s cheap,” said Kevin McGary, chairman of the California chapter of the Fredrick Douglas Society. “We want to be part of the strategy. We want to be included.”
