Laurie Goodstein of The New York Times reports that “the Mormon Church is grappling with a wave of doubt and disillusionment among members who encountered information on the Internet that sabotaged what they were taught about their faith.” Joseph Smith and his disciples, who created the church just 183 years ago, left behind a multitude of papers and documents that sometimes contradict themselves and history. “The Roman Catholic Church has had 2,000 years to work through the hiccups in its history,” says Terryl L. Givens, a Mormon professor of English, literature and religion at the University of Richmond. “Mormonism is still an adolescent religion.”
