Chinese Police Blame Religious Extremists For Violence In Region

Chris Buckley of The New York Times reports police in the volatile Chinese region of Xinjiang are blaming Muslim Uighur religious extremists for the recent violence there. International organizations are skeptical of the state’s account. Buckley writes, “Advocates of Uighur self-determination and international human rights groups, however, say China’s heavy-handed security policies in Xinjiang are exacerbating tensions with Uighurs.”
