New Laws Ban Most Abortions in North Dakota

At The New York Times, John Eligon and Erik Eckholm consider North Dakota’s recent approval of the “nation’s toughest abortion restrictions.” The new law bans abortions when a fetal heartbeat is “detectable,” a controversial measure that many legal scholars believe violates Roe v. Wade. Caitlin Borgmann, a law professor and abortion rights advocate at City University of New York, noted, “There are two clashing forces in the anti-abortion movement now. The incrementalists are chipping away at Roe and the others are getting impatient.”
