Pope Francis: Civil Unions Pragmatist?

While publicly opposed to same-sex marriage, Francis privately attempted to persuade other Catholic bishops to support civil unions for gay couples in 2010, calling it the “lesser of two evils.” Nonetheless, McDonough notes, “In addition to supporting widespread protests against gay marriage, [Francis] called the political battle to defeat the measure ‘God’s war’ and denounced gay parenting as ‘the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts.’”
