“They Deserve a Vote”: Call and Response in Obama’s State of the Union

Susan Brooks Thistelthwaite looks at Obama’s call and response at the end of Tuesday’s State of the Union. Thistelthwaite compares this ending, which she calls the “amen” chorus, to a church sermon, noting the unity in the audience. “I think in the ‘call and response’ conclusion to the State of the Union,” Thistelthwaite writes, “we felt the spirit of our connection to one another.”
