Birth Control Rule Altered to Allay Religious Objections

Robert Pear of the New York Times reports on the Obama administration’s proposal to compromise with religious organizations on the HHS mandate, which requires health insurance plans to provide free contraceptives. The new proposal would expand the number of groups exempt from paying directly for birth control coverage. According to the Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, “the proposal would guarantee free coverage of birth control ‘while respecting religious concerns.’”
