Andrew Higgins of The New York Times investigates how Muslims in Denmark have come to support the right to free speech for Lars Hedegaard, an anti-Islamist public figure who was nearly assassinated earlier this month. In a country that is divided between extremist views towards Islam, Higgins notes that the Muslim population’s shift in approach is significant, marking a new era of relations: “That Danish Muslims would rally to defend Mr. Hedegaard, a man they detest, suggests a significant shift in attitudes, or at least in strategies, by a people at the center of a European debate over whether immigrants from mostly poor Muslim lands can adjust to the values of their new and, thanks to a long economic crisis, increasingly wary and often inhospitable homes.”
