A High Holy Call for Lox, and Old Hands to Slice It, at Zabar’s

In The New York Times, Corey Kilgannon reports that iconic New York deli Zabar’s recruits former employees during the High Holy Days to help handle the rush of customers wanting their expertly sliced lox. Frank Cabrera, who is not Jewish, now lives in the Dominican Republic, but he worked at Zabar’s for 26 years before retiring. “Every year I know Zabar’s will call me,’’ he told Kilgannon. “They fly me up, pay for my plane ticket.”
