Obama to Meet Cardinal Jaime Ortega at Havana Cathedral

At The Wall Street Journal, José de Córdoba reports that President Barack Obama will meet with Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega during the first official visit by an American leader to Havana in more than eight decades. The meeting demonstrates the crucial role that the Catholic Church has played in relaxing tensions between the two countries, as Pope Francis first proposed the normalization of relations. “The church has always seen its work as opening spaces where Cuban society can find itself,” said Carlos Saladrigas, a Cuban-American businessman traveling to Havana with Obama.
