AME Church Founder Honored with Postage Stamp

Adelle M. Banks of Religion News Service reports, “Richard Allen, the first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will be honored with a U.S. postage stamp commemorating his leadership of the historically black denomination founded 200 years ago.” The unwillingness of the Methodist Church to recognize black preachers and religious leaders led Allen to create the denomination. “The birth of strong black institutions is a part of his legacy,” said Rev. Robert M. Franklin of Emory University.
